Service Description
Professor Marycarmen Olivares chose Cristina Rivera Garza's novel El invencible verano de Liliana (2024 Pulitzer Prize) for our reading club reading club. On July 16, 1990, Liliana Rivera Garza, Cristina´s, was a victim of femicide. She was a 20-year-old architecture student. For years, she had been trying to end her relationship with a high school boyfriend who insisted on not letting her go. A few weeks before the tragedy, Liliana finally decided: in the harshest part of winter, she discovered, as Albert Camus had said, that there was an invincible summer within her. She would leave him behind. She would start a new life. She would pursue a master's degree and then a doctorate and travel to London. The Invincible Summer of Liliana is an excavation into the life of a brilliant and daring woman who, like us, like everyone else, lacked the necessary language to identify, denounce, and combat sexist violence and the partner terrorism that characterizes so many patriarchal relationships. Please join us on this journey of Mexican literature, enjoy Cristina Rivera's book, and enhance your Spanish.
