Service Description

Mexico's murals, the most distinctive artistic genre of Latin America, have been a unique offering to the world, originating in the first half of the 20th century. These visual narratives served as a canvas for expressing socio-political scenarios of the time, with the Mexican Revolution being a pivotal inspiration for many artists. In this course, we invite you to traverse the vibrant history of mural artistry through the stories and works of influential women muralists. We will delve into the artistic expressions of native Mexican, naturalized Mexican, and foreign female muralists, offering an unprecedented journey through their powerful murals created during the 20th century. Our journey is divided into four tertulias or discussion groups, each focusing on the contributions of different artists. Week 1 - "Early Pioneers: Aurora Reyes, Rina Lazo and Electa Arenal" Explore the groundbreaking work of these early pioneers. We will delve into their murals' unique themes and stylistic variations that set a precedent for women artists to follow. Week 2 - "Creating Identities: Elena Huerta, Greenwood Sisters and Valeta Swann" Examine the works of these artists who played crucial roles in solidifying the identity of Mexican muralism. We will discuss how their works reflected societal changes and personal experiences. Week 3 - "Breaking Boundaries: María Izquierdo, Fany Rabel, and Leonora Carrington" Discover how these artists pushed the boundaries of muralism. We will investigate their daring themes and innovative techniques that challenged traditional norms. Week 4 - "Modern Muralism: Nadine Prado, Regina Raull, and Maris Bustamante" Conclude the course by exploring the work of these contemporary muralists. We will discuss how they have further developed this genre, adding their unique perspectives and continuing the rich tradition of women in Mexican muralism.
