The Club de Cine is a one-hour conversation about a single film, guided by an ICO teacher and held entirely in Spanish. Unlike a lecture or a screening, the session is built around you: you watch the film on your own beforehand, receive preparation materials by email from your teacher, and arrive ready to react, disagree, and connect the film to your own experience. Each participant receives slightly different materials, so the conversation has somewhere to go. This session takes on Pedro Páramo (2024), directed by Rodrigo Prieto — one of Mexico's most acclaimed cinematographers, here making his directorial debut. The film follows Juan Preciado as he travels to Comala to find the father he never knew, Pedro Páramo, and finds instead a desolate town inhabited by its own dead. It is Juan Rulfo's 1955 novel, a foundational text of Latin American literature, translated into image and sound. We'll talk about the choices behind that translation: what a novel built from voices becomes when it acquires faces, how the film handles time and memory, and whether Comala on screen matches the Comala you imagined. Spanish subtitles are recommended. Reading the novel is optional — not a requirement, and not an advantage. Both readers and non-readers are welcome. Watch the film, then talk about it — entirely in Spanish, in a group of no more than five. In this one-session Club de Cine we discuss Rodrigo Prieto's adaptation of Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo: what the film does with Rulfo's fractured storytelling, how it renders Comala, and what stays with you afterward. You don't need to have read the novel. You do need to have seen the film.
