Online Session (Zoom)

Service Description

Frida Kahlo: vida, obra y legado Five one-hour tertulias exploring the life and work of Mexico's most recognizable artist — designed and guided by Professor Patricia Castellanos. This is a conversation course, not a lecture series. In groups of no more than three students, you'll discuss Kahlo's paintings, her politics, her marriage, and her afterlife as a global icon — entirely in Spanish. Each session moves through one chapter of her story, and each participant receives different preparation materials by email beforehand, so the conversation has real friction and real exchange rather than five people repeating the same reading. You'll leave with more confident Spanish and a far more complicated picture of an artist most people know only from a photograph. The five tertulias: 1. ¿Quién fue Frida? Los primeros años Coyoacán, her German father and his photography studio, polio at six, the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, and the 1925 accident that redirected her life. 2. El inicio y la trayectoria de su obra Her first self-portrait, the influence of ex-votos and retablos on her style, the surrealist label she rejected, and her exhibitions in New York, Paris, and — only once, at the very end — in Mexico. 3. Frida y Diego Marriage in 1929, divorce in 1939, remarriage a year later. The Detroit and New York years, the betrayals on both sides, and Las dos Fridas. 4. Frida y la política The Communist Party, Trotsky's exile in La Casa Azul, and her deliberate use of Tehuana dress and mexicanidad as political statement. 5. Los últimos años, su muerte y La Casa Azul Declining health and amputation, her final solo exhibition, her death in 1954, and how the blue house in Coyoacán became a museum — including the wardrobe sealed inside it for fifty years. Details: 5 sessions · 1 hour each · maximum 3 participants · online via Zoom · preparation materials sent individually by the teacher before each session.
